How long does a Bitcoin swap take when the mempool is congested
When the Bitcoin mempool is congested, a swap can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to complete. The exact time depends on the fee you set, the degree of congestion, and the swap provider's internal processes.

Status: waiting for your deposit
You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.
The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. sonnyonsol.xyz never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.
Why congestion matters
The Bitcoin mempool is the waiting room for unconfirmed transactions. Miners select transactions from this pool and include them in blocks. When many people send Bitcoin at once, the mempool fills up. Miners naturally pick the transactions offering the highest fees relative to their size. Your swap transaction sits in the mempool until a miner includes it.
A typical block arrives roughly every ten minutes. In normal conditions, a transaction with a moderate fee might confirm within one to three blocks - ten to thirty minutes. In heavy congestion, that same fee might leave your transaction waiting for dozens or even hundreds of blocks.
What determines your swap time
Three factors control how quickly a swap involving Bitcoin completes.
The fee you pay. Most swap services let you choose a fee tier. A higher fee gets you near the front of the line. A low fee can leave you waiting indefinitely. Some services use dynamic fee estimation, but during sudden spikes, those estimates can lag behind reality.
The degree of congestion. Mempool size fluctuates constantly. You can check current mempool statistics on any block explorer. When the mempool holds tens of thousands of unconfirmed transactions, wait times stretch. When it clears, even low-fee transactions confirm quickly.
The swap provider's architecture. Some providers wait for a certain number of confirmations before releasing the other asset. Bitcoin is slower to confirm than most other chains. A provider might require one confirmation, or three, or six. Each confirmation adds roughly ten minutes - but only after your transaction finally confirms. If the provider also needs to send the return transaction on another chain, that chain's congestion adds its own delay.
What happens when fees spike suddenly
Bitcoin's fee market is volatile. A sudden surge in demand - from a popular NFT mint, exchange withdrawals, or a price movement - can push fees up tenfold in minutes. If your swap transaction was submitted with a fee calculated minutes earlier, it may now be too low. Some swap services automatically bump fees for pending transactions. Others do not. If yours does not, you may need to contact support or wait for the mempool to clear.
Why Bitcoin swaps behave differently
Bitcoin does not support smart contracts in the way Ethereum or Solana do. A Bitcoin swap for another asset typically uses a centralized or semi-centralized intermediary. The intermediary receives your Bitcoin, waits for confirmations, then sends the other asset. That means the swap speed is directly tied to Bitcoin's confirmation time, not just the provider's internal speed.
If you are swapping from another chain into Bitcoin, the same delay applies in reverse. The provider sends Bitcoin to you, and you wait for confirmations before you can spend it.
What you can do
If the mempool is congested and you need a swap quickly, you have limited options. You can choose a higher fee tier if the provider offers one. You can wait for a quieter period - mempool congestion often eases during weekends or late at night. You can also check current mempool conditions before starting a swap and decide whether to wait.
For a broader understanding of how Bitcoin fits into cross-chain swaps, see the hub page on swapping Bitcoin for other assets. It covers the structural differences that make Bitcoin slower and less flexible than other chains in these transactions.
The honest answer is that congestion makes Bitcoin swaps unpredictable. There is no guaranteed time. The mempool is a market, and markets do not promise speed.
