Why address types matter in swaps

Bitcoin has several address formats. They are not interchangeable. Each represents a different script that tells the network how coins can be spent. When you swap Bitcoin for another asset, the exchanger gives you a deposit address. You send coins to that address. If the address type does not match what your wallet supports, or if you paste a wrong format, the transaction may never confirm on the exchanger's end.

Three address types are in common use:

A fourth type, Taproot (starting with "bc1p"), exists but is not yet standard for swaps. Many exchangers cannot decode it. Sending to a bc1p address will likely fail.

The real risk: copy-paste errors and format mismatches

Address type incompatibility causes a specific failure mode. Your wallet sees a valid Bitcoin address. It broadcasts the transaction. The network confirms it. But the exchanger's system cannot interpret the script, so it never credits your swap. The coins arrive at the address but the exchanger cannot move them. Recovery requires contacting support, which can take days or fail entirely.

Native SegWit (bc1) avoids this because it is the current industry standard for new swap integrations. Most platforms build their Bitcoin handling around it. If the exchanger supports bc1, you have the widest compatibility with their internal systems.

When to use legacy addresses

If you are unsure what your wallet supports, legacy (starting with "1") is the safest fallback. Every Bitcoin wallet ever made can send to a legacy address. The trade-off is higher explorers/gas-fee-calculation-explorer/">transaction fees. For small swaps, the fee difference might be trivial. For large swaps, the extra cost adds up.

Some older wallets cannot generate or send to bc1 addresses. If you use one, you must use legacy. Trying to force a bc1 address into a wallet that does not support it will produce an error before the transaction leaves your device, which is better than a swap that fails after broadcast.

Check before you send

Swap interfaces often display the deposit address in a QR code and as text. Read the first three characters. If they start with "bc1", send from a SegWit-capable wallet. If they start with "3", any modern wallet works. If "1", any wallet works.

If you see "bc1p", do not send. Contact the support team first. The swap will likely fail.
